Some songs turn a room full of people into a very enthusiastic, slightly untidy choir. You might not know the verses, but when the chorus arrives you suddenly have all the confidence in the world.
Build a playlist around participation
Start with songs your particular group knows, rather than assuming everyone loves the same classics. A family gathering, a student party and a small acoustic music night will each have a different set of shared favourites.
A clear chorus, space to breathe and a melody people recognise can help. So can a song with a story attached: a school disco favourite or something everyone heard on a memorable holiday.
Give everyone a choice
Ask each person to nominate one song and explain why. Keep the playlist short enough that every choice gets heard. Let people join in, hum quietly or simply enjoy listening; there is no audition taking place.
For a change, try an acoustic version of a familiar track. Notice whether you sing the recorded arrangement from memory or follow what the performer is doing now. That small difference can turn an old favourite into a fresh listening experience.
